Year 3 & 4 - Blackbirds

Term 1 - Autumn 2018

Year 3 and 4 were busy learning about plastics and the need for recycling. Thank you for all the bottles you sent in - we had an amazing 106 - but were concerned for the environment as these were all single use plastics.

We had a morning outside sorting and classifying them to collect data sets which we then put into bar charts. The next day we made beautiful fish from them, to remind ourselves of the dangers of plastics pollution to the fish in our rivers and oceans.

Music 2018 - Children have been working together to write a rhythm for untuned percussion instruments, then performing their composition.

We have been making models

During Term 1 & 2 we have been learning French

Year 3 and 4 Information for September

PE Kit

Your child will need to bring their PE kit into school at the start of each school term. We shall be doing PE on Monday and Thursday afternoons. The children should have a t-shirt, shorts and a pair of daps or trainers. Tracksuit bottoms can be purchases from school. Please make sure all kit is clearly named. Jewellery needs to be removed for PE. If earrings are unable to be removed please provide medical tape for your child to cover them up.

Homework

English homework will be given out on a Wednesday and returned the following Monday. The children will have a Reading Journal with their English homework in. Maths homework will be set on Friday and returned the following Wednesday. The children will have a separate maths homework book.

Spellings

Children will work on spellings every week as part of their daily English lesson. Their spellings are appropriate to their current level of need and may include:

  • Words from the National Curriculum Y3/4 spelling list

  • Patterns/words from the Y3/4 curriculum

  • High frequency words/ adventurous vocabulary

Spellings will often be sent home for English homework.

Reading

Your child will be given the opportunity to read independently throughout the school week and will also participate in weekly guided reading sessions. They will also be participating in research tasks, discussion tasks, shared text tasks and comprehension tasks. It is also recommended that children read at home regularly; four of=r more ‘home-reads’ a week earns your child a house point each Friday.

Parent Helpers

We welcome any parents who would like to help in our class. Listening to readers, working with small groups or enriching the curriculum by offering your own specific skills and talents; just a few of the ways you could help.

Open Door

If you have any questions or queries please come and speak to any member of the year 3/4 team either before or after school.

Have a lovely summer and we look forward to seeing you in September!
