Year 1 and 2 Information

PE Kit

Your child will need to bring their PE kit into school at the start of each school term. We shall be doing PE on Wednesday afternoons. The children should have a t-shirt, shorts and a pair of daps or trainers. Tracksuit bottoms can be purchased from school. Please make sure all kit is clearly named. Jewellery needs to be removed during PE lessons. If earrings are unable to be removed please provide medical tape for your child to cover them up.

Forest School

Children will take part in Forest School activities and so will need wellies and waterproofs in school.

Homework

Homework for year 1 will be given out on a Tuesday and returned the following Monday. Year 2’s homework will be set on Thursday and returned the following Wednesday. The children will be given a task to complete over the week which will be linked to literacy, numeracy or topic. They will complete it in a Learning Log.

Spellings

Your child will practise spellings daily in school during registration and as part of the daily phonics lesson. Spelling lists are taken initially from the common exception word lists and then from phonics word lists appropriate to their year group.  We encourage the spellings to be practised at home and so the child’s current list will be included in Learning Logs.

Reading

Your child will be given the opportunity to read independently throughout the school week and will also participate in weekly guided reading sessions. This provides them the opportunity to read a range of text types in a group and to develop comprehension skills. It is important that your child reads at home and we recommend that they should read at least four times a week to an adult. Please sign your child’s yellow book once they have read. House points are awarded when children have read four times in one week. Children’s books will be changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week. Please ensure your child places their book bag in the boxes as they enter the classroom in the morning.

Parent helpers

We welcome any parents who would like to help in our class. This may be listening to individual readers, working with small groups, trip helpers and enriching the curriculum by offering a specific skill related to our topic. Let us know if you would like to come in.
