At Tibberton Community Primary School and Early Years, our curriculum is created around the September 2014 National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 & 2 and the Early Years 2020 framework in EYFS for our Reception and nursery classes.
PURPOSE
Aspire and Flourish
Our curriculum encourages children to aspire to do their best and to develop their own curiosity and sense of inquisitiveness. We help all children to flourish by supporting them with challenge, curiosity and adapt our curriculum for our SEND provision. . We always expect the best from the children and are ready to scaffold their learning for the next steps whatever age, or level of development they are at - focusing on our end points of learning.
We encourage the children to have an intrinsic desire to learn and determination to succeed. We work hard to make our topics inspirational or for them to follow the children’s interests so that they are up to date and relate to children. We encourage children to be able to evaluate and assess their own learning to enable them to progress and develop their critical thinking.
The curriculum is not all about results but about teaching children to become rounded people proud of themselves. We pride ourselves on our children's achievements and progress and make sure that children are well prepared for tests and assessments in a sensitive way.
Aims – Why have we designed our curriculum.
Our curriculum encompasses the activities that we as a school organise in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum or EYFS but also the ‘hidden curriculum’, or what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others, whilst developing knowledge, skills and attitudes to learning, in order that they aspire to their true potential.
The curriculum also includes the range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experiences of our children.
Reconnecting with our curriculum – an annex to our policy during Covid 19
During Covid 19 – our curriculum has been altered to suit the needs of the children in our community. Whilst children were being home-schooled staff adapted the curriculum as a whole to make activities easy to teach from home whilst still developing children’s knowledge and skills.
Once back in school from September 2020 – the staff have used government guidance to plan a curriculum that meets the diverse needs of our children. During the first term activities are based around wellbeing and reconnection - reconnection to learning and reconnection to each other. Staff have been assessing where children are physically, mentally, emotionally as well as academically. They have been imaginative in how to approach the curriculum – concentrating on the basics of English, Maths and PSHE whilst working out ways to include subjects that hold children’s interests and get them engaged in learning.
The staff are spiralling back to previous learning and teaching concepts in different ways and through different subjects to ensure that learning is embedded for the children.
The staff continue to use Tapestry to involve parents in their children’s learning and to be ready for home schooling or blended learning as needed.
Our curriculum is changing all the time to reflect the ongoing needs of the children and the community and will be a journey of discovery for all us as we reconnect with our learning and work out what is best for our children.
